Cape Breeders report 6th Nov 2022

Drakenstein Stud’s evergreen champion sire Trippi has enjoyed a wonderful month or so, and the champion struck again at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth when his outstanding son Jet Dark ran out an emphatic winner of the G3 Cape Mile (1600m) on Saturday.

Despite not having raced since winning the G1 HKJC World Pool Champions Cup at the end of the July and having to carry 62 kgs in Saturday’s race, Jet Dark was all the rage for the 2022 Cape Mile and the handsome bay more than lived up to expectations.

Under red hot rider Richard Fourie, five-year-old Jet Dark raced well off the pace early in Saturday’s R250 000 feature before exploding into action with 200m left to run. From there, it was just a matter of who would run second, with Jet Dark powering away to score by a length and three-quarters.

One of five winners on the day for Justin Snaith, the Drakenstein Stud bred Jet Dark has now won eight of 17 starts for earnings of R4 320 350.
Equus Champion Miler, Middle Distance Horse and Older Colt last season, the brilliant Jet Dark has now won six graded races, with this tally including back to back wins in both the G1 Champions Cup and G1 L’Ormarins Queen’s Plate.

Out of the Jet Master mare Night Jet, Jet Dark was a R200 000 buy from the 2019 National Yearling Sale.

His sire Trippi has had a phenomenal start to the 2022-2023 racing season, with the former Vosburgh’s other flagbearers this season already including the likes of star three-year-old Charles Dickens, and fellow graded stakes winners Trip Of Fortune and Santa Maria. The latter went close to providing Trippi with yet more feature race success when she flew up late to claim third spot in Saturday’s Listed Laisserfaire Stakes at Kenilworth.

Cape Breeders report 9th Oct 2022

Drakenstein’s evergreen champion sire Trippi has been in explosive form of late and the End Sweep son’s great form continued at Turffontein on Saturday afternoon where Trippi filly Iphiko continued her winning streak.
In landing Saturday’s Santos Trade Afrik Middle Stakes (1000m), four-year-old Ipihko made it four wins on the bounce, and four wins from just eight starts in total.

Under Richard Fourie, the Mike de Kock trained filly flew home to score impressively by two and a half lengths in Saturday’s contest.

Bred by Team Valor International, Iphiko is out of the Western Winter mare Valor Red and is thus bred on the same Trippi/Western Winter cross as exported G1 SA Classic victor Lobo’s Legend.

South Africa’s Champion Sire of 2015-2016, Trippi had an outstanding weekend last week when his son Trip Of Fortune was awarded victory in the G3 Hollywoodbets Matchem Stakes and his daughter Santa Maria victorious in the same day’s G3 Diana Stakes.

Currently responsible for 89 stakes winners, Trippi has been responsible for more South African stakes winners than any other sire thus far this season.

Cape Breeders report 25th Sept 2022

Drakenstein Stud’s champion resident sire Trippi had a wonderful afternoon at Hollywoodbets Durbanville on Saturday.
Not only was Trippi’s classy son Somerset Maugham awarded victory in Saturday’s Listed Hollywoodbets Settlers Trophy, Trippi was responsible for two hugely impressive three-year-old winners on Durbanville’s card this past weekend.

Five-year-old Somerset Maugham became Trippi’s 89 stakes winner when he was promoted to first in Saturday’s Settlers Trophy (2000m). Under Richard Fourie, the Justin Snaith trained gelding fought out a thrilling finish with Han Solo, with the latter finishing first past the post before being demoted to second.

One of two Trippi sons to contest the 2022 Settlers Trophy (the other being fourth place finisher Crome Yellow), Somerset Maugham took his tally of wins to four with his score in Saturday’s 2000m contest.

Bred and owned by Drakenstein Stud, Somerset Maugham had shown promise as a three-year-old when he finished third in both the G3 WSB Legal Eagle Stakes and G3 WSB Pocket Power Stakes.

The gelding is out of the G2 Ipi Tombe Challenge winner Demanding Lady, who also produced G1 Gbets Cape Derby runner up Charles to the cover of Trippi.

Somerset Maugham and Charles’s unbeaten full-brother Charles Dickens made a scintillating return to the track when running out a brilliant winner of the eighth and final race on Saturday’s card. Winner of his first two starts, including last season’s Listed TAB Somerset 1200, the Candice Bass-Robinson trained Charles Dickens simply oozed class as he sauntered home to land Saturday’s Hollywoodbets Bright Future Graduation Plate (1250m) by three and a quarter lengths.
Now unbeaten in three starts, the Drakenstein Stud bred and owned colt looks destined for bigger and better things.

Trippi had kicked off Saturday in fine style when his Drakenstein Stud bred and owned daughter Hunting Trip romped home to win the first race, the Hollywoodbets Durbanville Welcomes You Maiden Plate (F&M) in facile style. A well backed favourite, three-year-old Hunting Trip powered clear in the closing stages to win impressively by three and three-quarter lengths.

Out of the Jet Master mare Hawker Hunter, and thus bred on the same cross as champion Jet Dark, Hunting Trip had finished second on debut before finishing third, to Gold Standard’s promising daughter Gold Poker Game, on her other subsequent outing.
South Africa’s Champion Sire of 2015-2016, Trippi had another wonderful season in 2021-2022 with his nine black type winners last season including such G1 winners as Jet Dark and Sweet Pepper.
